Frequently Asked Questions

Is all of your produce organic?

Yes! We believe that organic food is the best tasting, most nutrient-rich food out there. It comes without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, making it healthier for you and the environment.

Your support of organic enterprises is one way you can help save the environment from the toxic pesticides, herbicides and fungicides used in conventional farming! It's better for your health: organic farms use compost to build the nutritional value in their soil, which increases the nutritional value in your food. It tastes better, making it more enticing and fun to get your 5-9 a day!

Why buy local?

Food travels an average of 1,500-2,500 miles from farm to table, which not only is not good for the environment, but it also depletes the nutritional value of the food, giving you fewer nutrients in your diet that are essential to staying in good health. The fresher food is, the better it tastes, making eating that much more savory! Supporting local small farms strengthens your local economy and enables these enterprises to survive.

What do we consider local?

We stand by the Community Alliance with Family Farmers' definition for what is local: within a 150 mile radius. Our main growers are in San Benito and Santa Cruz counties and to keep the variety going for you, we also offer produce from surrounding counties on occasion. For those who are happy simply buying California-grown produce, we also offer citrus and other commodities from Southern California when there is none available from the Central Valley.

What counts as 'one' item?

The quantity varies per commodity and what is available to us.

A couple of examples: for greens (lettuce, chard, spinach, herbs) one bunch or one head counts as one of your items. For apples and most citrus, four pieces of fruit count as one of your items. For vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and rutabagas you get approximately one pound. So the quantity you get depends on its size. The quantity for each item is always listed in the availability list, so you will have that information when you place your order. Please see our Harvest Schedule for a complete list of fruits and vegetables.

Do eggs, coffee, tea, etc. count as items in my bag?

No, nuts, eggs, coffee, and tea may not be substitutes in your membership bag. They may be purchased separately.

Can I order eggs or other items you sell without being a member?

No, you must be a member receiving produce to order the extra items offered.

Can I try your program before committing for the entire season?

Yes! We offer a 4-week trial period for those who are unsure a CSA Membership will fit their lifestyle.

How do I know which bag size is right for me?

the bag size best suited for you truly depends on the amount of fruits and vegetables you and your household consume each week.

  • The Extra Small Bag is recommended for single people and households of two who eat a moderate amount of produce each week.
  • The Small Bag fits a family of two adults and two children who eat a moderate amount of produce on a weekly basis.
  • The Medium Bag fits a family of 4 or more who incorporate several servings of fruits and vegetables in their daily diet.
  • The Large Bag is best suited for larger families and individuals who eat a mostly, or completely vegetarian diet.
